A family legacy

María Planas Cabot (1900–2000) founded the Puig d’Olena sanatorium in Sant Martí de Centelles, 50 km from Barcelona. This center specialized in the treatment and research of tuberculosis and went on to become one of the most renowned institutions of its kind in Europe. María was the sister of Júlia Planas Cabot (1902–1994), wife of Antonio Puig Castelló (1889–1979), founder and driving force of the Puig company.

María Planas devoted her life to caring for the most vulnerable, both during the first stage of the sanatorium (1933–1955) and later when it became a preventorium (1955–1980), where she promoted autonomy and social integration for girls and women from the most disadvantaged areas of Barcelona. Antonio Puig supported the maintenance of the sanatorium and, later, of the women’s training center, until his death in 1979.
